Crohn’s Disease in Australia
According to a report by the Digestive Health Foundation, around 28,000 Australians have had Crohn’s disease as of 2013. What’s more concerning, however, is that Australia is also one of the countries where this condition is most prevalent. A 2013 report by Crohn’s & Colitis Australia shows that there were around 75,000 Australians who had either Crohn’s Disease or ulcerative colitis as of that year, a number that the organisation estimates to rise to around 100,000 by the year 2022.
Because this disease is chronic and still has no definite cure, it can lead to several complications and challenges down the road, especially if symptoms become severe. This can cause additional emotional and physical stress on the patient, not to mention the anxiety of potential financial burdens of lifelong treatments.
Given these, it’s clear that patients with Crohn’s Disease would benefit from life insurance and the right protection in times of need. And although these may be more difficult to get for those with this condition, it’s definitely not impossible.
This is where Special Risk Managers come in. We’ll help you find the insurance you need and the cover you deserve.
Although finding the right cover for your condition can be difficult, it might not be impossible. At Special Risk Managers, we’ll help you determine your Crohn’s disease life insurance and income protection options you seek.

The Challenges of Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s Disease can develop at any age, although it commonly surfaces when patients are young or in their adolescent stages. And while its exact cause is still unknown, some people are thought to be more genetically predisposed to it than others. In fact, if your family has a history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), then you may have a higher chance of developing this condition.
There are five main types of Crohn’s Disease that are classified by the part of the digestive tract it affects:
This is the most common type of Crohn’s disease, affecting the colon and the ileum (the lower section of the small intestine). Symptoms for Ileocolitis include diarrhoea, weight loss, and cramps in the lower right abdomen.
Ileitis is a condition characterised by inflammation of the ileum. Its effects are similar to Ileocolitis, with weight loss, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps as the major symptoms. Aside from this, some inflammatory abscesses may also be present in the lower abdominal region.
- Gastroduodenal Crohn’s Disease
Gastroduodenal Crohn’s Disease is a type that affects the stomach and the duodenum, which is the upper part of the small intestine that connects to the stomach. Typical symptoms include nausea, weight loss, and a lack of appetite. In some cases, inflammation can cause the bowel to get blocked, which can also cause vomiting.
Jejunoileitis occurs when the top half of the small intestine (also called the jejunum) becomes inflamed because of this disease. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and experiencing cramps after meals.
- Crohn’s Colitis
Unlike the other forms of Crohn’s Disease, this type primarily affects the colon. Inflammation in this area can cause symptoms like diarrhoea, skin lesions, and rectal bleeding.
