Prostate Cancer Life Insurance and Income Protection
Prostate cancer – a disease caused by abnormal cells in the prostate – (a small, walnut-sized gland beneath the male bladder) – is the third most diagnosed type of cancer in Australia.
Many people believe that getting insured once you’ve survived prostate cancer is impossible, but this is a myth. We have had success in obtaining cover for men who have recovered from Prostate cancer, as well as managing to secure Life Insurance for some sufferers of Prostate cancer before they have entered remission. Special Risk Manager makes it easy to obtain the right Prostate Cancer Life Insurance cover for you.
How We Determine Coverage Eligibility
Factors that Special Risk Managers’ will consider when determining the type and level of life or income protection insurance you qualify for include:
- Your age, weight and smoking status
- If you have a family history of prostate cancer
- When you were diagnosed with prostate cancer
- The severity of your condition
- What treatment you are currently undergoing
- Whether you are taking medication as directed
- If you have had any surgeries to remove the cancer
- How long you have been in remission (if applicable)
Being upfront and presenting all of the information you have about your condition early on is the best course of action for anyone living with prostate cancer who is seeking out life or income protection insurance. This will protect you from getting incorrect advice and potentially invalidating your policy.

Although finding the right cover for your condition can be difficult, it’s not impossible. At Special Risk Managers, we’ll help you understand your options with regard to the cover that is available to you in light of your prostate cancer. We’ll explore your different options and seek to find an affordable and comprehensive cover to protect you and your family.

Who Is Affected By Prostate Cancer
Older men are more likely to get prostate cancer. In fact, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, 63% of cases diagnosed are in men aged over 65, and by the age of 85, there is a 1 in 5 chance that males will have the disease.
A family history of prostate cancer can also increase your risk. If you have a first-degree male relative who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, your chances of getting it yourself are higher than normal. Your risk of getting prostate cancer also increases if multiple relatives have the disease and if those family members were diagnosed with it when they were young.
Prostate Cancer Symptoms
Because it is usually a slow-growing disease, men can live for years before any prostate cancer symptoms show. This is why it is so important for men – particularly those with a family history of the disease – to get screened for prostate cancer via the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal examination methods.
Symptoms of prostate cancer often relate to urination. They can include a burning sensation or pain when urinating, difficulty urinating, starting and stopping while urinating, more frequent urination during the night, inability to control your bladder, and decreased urination flow. Other symptoms can include blood in semen, trouble getting and maintaining an erection, painful ejaculation, swelling, numbness, and bone pain.
Stages of Prostate Cancer
There are four different stages of prostate cancer:
- Localised: At this stage, cancer is contained wholly within the prostate. It has not spread to any other part of the body.
- Locally advanced: At this stage, cancer has spread beyond the prostate itself but is still confined within the prostate region.
- Advanced and metastatic: In the more advanced stages of prostate cancer, the cancer has spread to another part of the body. It may have spread to the organs near the prostate, such as the bladder or rectum, or it may have been at the most advanced stage and have spread to the bones or lymph nodes.
Prostate Cancer Treatment & Longevity
According to the Cancer Council Australia, every year approximately 20,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the disease claims the lives of 3000 men.
There is, however, a 95% five-year survival rate for prostate cancer, and nearly all patients who are treated at the localised stage will live longer than five years. Because prostate cancer typically affects older men, this impacts the long-term survival rates doctors currently use.
Prostate cancer treatments have advanced in the last 30 years, increasing the life expectancy of those who are diagnosed.
The treatment that is best for you will depend on your health, age, the stage that your cancer is at and how effectively you can manage the side effects that come with different treatment types (radiation, surgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy and other medical treatments).
It’s important to talk to your insurance specialist about your treatment plan as this will have a bearing on the coverage on offer to you.
